At 60 cm square this covers a lap and folds into a cutlery pocket from the same piece of cloth – which is why banquet rooms buy it and lunch services do not.

The size does most of the work here. At 60 x 60 cm – 23.62 inches square – the napkin is large enough to cover a lap under a full dinner plate and to fold into a generous cutlery pocket, which is the point in a banquet or hotel dining room and unnecessary in a lunch service. The edge comes three ways: a hemstitch, a deliberately frayed finish, or a scalloped embroidered border, all hand-finished so the corner stays square. Embroidery is stitched to a motif or to artwork you supply, eight stock colours are held with custom colour from 100 pieces, and the range is certified to Oeko-Tex 100.

Bought for banquet rooms, hotel dining rooms and the home, and for events where one square has to look substantial from across the table. That is the whole argument for going this large: it is bought by rooms that seat people for two hours, not by counters that turn tables in half an hour. And because each of the three edge treatments takes up a different amount, the finish and the dimensions are agreed together rather than one after the other. Mixing two or three of the available shades across a setting is how a scheme gets built without a printed pattern.
– Wash cool, 30℃ or below. A 60 cm napkin holds more water than a smaller square and takes longer to dry than it looks like it will.
– Wash by finish type rather than all together. A frayed edge sheds a little fibre for the first few washes and will do it onto a hemstitched piece.
– A mild liquid detergent. Powder settles where the cloth is doubled at the border and dries there as a pale line.
– No bleach and no optical brighteners, which dull a dyed linen and weaken the threads holding a scalloped border.
– On a frayed edge, trim any long threads after the first wash rather than pulling them, which unravelled the weave further.
– Tumble dry low or line dry. High heat shrinks linen, and a shrunken 60 cm napkin loses the coverage it was bought for.
– Press on the reverse while slightly damp, and press around a scalloped border rather than over it.
– Iron embroidery on the reverse only. A direct iron flattens the stitch and leaves a shine on the cloth.
– If the napkins are stacked, fold on a different line each time so no single crease becomes permanent across the larger surface.
A pre-production sample is supplied for approval before bulk production, and it covers style, construction, dimension and fabric. Edge finish, colour and any logo are agreed at that stage, since a hemstitch, a frayed edge and a scalloped border each consume a different amount of the square. Bulk runs 31 days up to 300 pieces; from 301 to 2,000 allow about fifty days, and above that the schedule is agreed per order. Units are 30 by 50 by 8 centimetres at 0.9 kilograms, and OEM work is accepted with the specification set by the buyer.
