The phrase bundles together a plant source, a generic fibre and somebody else’s brand.

That wording problem comes before softness, price or colour. Bamboo may be the cellulose source. Lyocell is a manufactured-fibre name. TENCEL™ belongs to Lenzing. A buyer needs to know which of those statements can be supported for the cloth on order.

Only then is it worth comparing samples.

The paperwork problem comes first

Paste the composition line into the sample comments. Beside it, write: “Please confirm the words we may print on the sewn label.” A changed answer is useful evidence. Keep it, because the quotation was using shorthand.

US guidance is quite specific on bamboo wording. Under the Federal Trade Commission’s bamboo textile guidance, a rayon or viscose process still calls for the rayon or viscose name, even when bamboo supplied the cellulose. “Bamboo” on its own suggests that the cloth contains fibre taken directly from the plant. That is not the same description.

TENCEL™ brings another check. A piece of lyocell does not acquire the TENCEL™ name by resemblance. If that name is part of the retail story, the order file should show why it can be used and how it is meant to appear in copy.

The material page in the order file does not need to be complicated. It does need to be complete. Record:

generic fibre and percentage;

any plant-source wording;

branded-fibre name, if applicable;

yarn and construction;

fabric finish;

final care-label composition.

Do this while the label is still a document on screen. After the printer has finished the inserts and bags, the same correction means waste, delay and another approval round.

Two swatches can make a bad comparison

Picture the usual swatch review: a light sateen in the left hand, a heavier twill in the right. The sateen feels cooler. The twill hangs with more weight. Fibre may play a part, although construction and finish have already made the comparison uneven.

This is the weakness in a casual bamboo-versus-lyocell test. Several variables have moved before the buyer even touches the cloth: weight, weave, yarn, dye and finishing.

So decide what the test is for. A fibre trial needs constructions that are reasonably close. A range review needs the real fabrics that can be cut and sewn for that programme. This may not produce a neat scientific winner; it does produce a usable buying answer.

Do not stop at an unsewn cutting. Turn the proposed cloth into the relevant item and launder it by the intended care method. Record the dimensions on both sides of that wash. On a fitted sheet, pocket depth belongs on the sheet as well as length and width. A trial fit on the target mattress will quickly expose a corner that looked fine on the worktable.

A pleasing fabric can still produce a sheet that rides up. A soft finish can hide skew until the first wash. Deep shades may show pressure shine at folds or colour movement during rubbing. Any one of these can turn into a return reason, so note it against the sample code.

Der HSC Textiles bamboo lyocell bedding range gives the sampling discussion somewhere concrete to begin. A premium-sounding noun cannot repair a vague specification.

Cooling and environmental copy need their own evidence

Retail copy often moves faster than technical approval. “Cooling” turns into “temperature regulating”; “plant derived” somehow arrives as “eco-friendly.” When the artwork returns for sign-off, the stronger words may no longer have an identifiable source.

Do not place fibre content and product benefits in the same approval box. One field says what the textile contains. The other makes a promise about the finished sheet, and that promise needs its own support.

A cool first touch may be a useful product feature. It says little about the next eight hours. Weave, mass and finish influence the result, which is why the pack should wait until the finished samples have been compared on equal terms and the market requirement is clear.

Environmental language deserves the same pause. “Plant based,” “closed loop,” “biodegradable” and “lower impact” are four different statements. Ask where the chosen statement came from, then save that source beside the approved artwork. Teams preparing US-bound goods can also cross-check the FTC’s textile labelling guide.

No support yet? Leave the phrase for a later artwork round. Fewer adjectives will not change the feel of the sheet.

Choose for the range, not for the sample table

What job does the fabric have?

For an online comfort range, drape, first touch and photographic colour may carry a lot of weight. A serviced-apartment order has a different headache: repeated washing and replacement pieces must not turn the rooms into a patchwork. A branded-fibre collection adds control of names and documents to the physical checks.

Write down that job before opening the swatch box. Otherwise, the sample that wins in ten seconds may create the hardest repeat order.

Also try not to change everything together. Keeping the base construction fixed while colour and packaging vary gives the next order a stable reference. If fibre, weave, weight and finish all move at once, a problem has too many possible causes.

Bamboo, cotton and linen appear in the wider HSC Textiles bedding collection. Looking across them can help a buyer find the words for a desired hand or drape. After that discussion, “the soft blue one” must give way to a fabric code and a dated sample.

Before bulk release, read all four versions

Lay out the approved sample, specification, label artwork and online copy. Read them as four versions of the same product.

Does the composition match? Do the fabric and colour codes match? Is the care method the one used for the wash check? Are the finished measurements taken from the current sample rather than an earlier round?

When a yarn or finish changes, do not accept “same quality” as the whole explanation. Record the substitution and repeat the checks it may affect. A close colour may drape differently. A familiar hand may shrink differently. Give the replacement sample a new code and approval date.

This file will matter again when the range is reordered. Six months later, a clear code is more dependable than anybody’s memory of a swatch meeting.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Does bamboo lyocell always mean TENCEL bedding?

No. “Lyocell” names a fibre type; TENCEL™ names Lenzing’s brand. “Bamboo” may only be telling you about the cellulose source. The paperwork and the final label should settle which description applies.

Which one feels cooler?

The name alone cannot answer it.
