The ruffle is the whole design. A plain hemmed napkin reads as utility on a formal table, while an edge that has been gathered and stitched reads as dressy from across the room – and at 38 x 38 cm the proportion leaves enough cloth to fold or lay flat. It is made from linen, plain dyed, and the range runs past 300 stock colours so a shade can be matched to a tablecloth, a ribbon or an existing scheme. – A short, cool cycle is enough. Linen releases soil easily, and heat is the one thing it genuinely dislikes.
– Keep the first two washes to one shade family. A fresh dye lot always sheds a little colour, and it will find a lighter cloth.
– Leave bleach and brighteners out of it. They strip the dye and leave the fibre brittle.
– Line dry in the shade. Direct sun fades a deep shade faster than washing ever will.
– The gathered edge is the part to look after: reshape it by hand while the cloth is still damp and let it dry that way, and it holds.
– A warm iron on the reverse smooths the body of the napkin. Ironing the ruffle flat does not come back.
– Skip softener. The film it leaves stops the linen taking up a spill, which is half the reason to put linen on a table.
– Move the fold line if the napkins live in a drawer, so no single crease becomes permanent.
