1. Before using it for the first time, I’d suggest giving it a gentle rinse. This little step helps wash away any sizing agents or extra dye that might be on the surface. Once you do that, the linen will feel softer for future use, and it won’t fade as easily either.
2. When you’re washing it, stay away from chlorine bleach—definitely a no-go. And you don’t need to use fabric softener at all. Go for a mild detergent instead; it’s gentler on the natural fibers and keeps them in good shape.
3. Wash linen with room-temperature water. Don’t soak it in hot water, don’t dry-clean it in unsuitable conditions, and when hand-washing, avoid scrubbing it back and forth vigorously. If you’re using a washing machine, skip the shake-dry setting. After washing, hang it up in a well-ventilated spot—direct sunlight is bad for it, so keep it out of that. Low-temperature ironing works best. If you’re using a dryer, set the temp below 30°C. High heat can ruin the linen fabric and make the product lose its shape completely.
4. When drying linen, lay it flat to dry. Never stretch it too much—you’ll end up with deformed items. For storage, fold them neatly and put them in a dark place that’s not too humid but has good ventilation. That way, they’ll stay in great condition.
5. Try not to hang linen on sharp objects—they can tear the fabric. Linen soaks up a moderate amount of water, so when it’s wet, it gets heavier. But it also has a really nice drape to it, which is one of its best features.
