The cotton is treated with a stain-repellent finish during production—not an aftermarket spray. Liquids bead up on contact; you can blot them off with a napkin before they have a chance to soak through. The treatment lasts about 30 or so commercial wash cycles before it starts to fade, which is pretty standard for this category.
